If you are based in the UK and consider yourself a self-respecting Robert Pattinson fan, then you would know by now Water for Elephants UK release has now been out for the last 24 hours. If this is news to you, what rock have you been hiding? Now not only can you indulge in a 2-hours-plus Rob-fest, but you can also get a piece of him – well, one of his shirts, anyway.
Based on Sara Gruen’s bestselling novel of the same name, Water for Elephants, starring Robert Pattinson, Reese Witherspoon and Christoph Waltz is a period drama which tells the compelling tale of forbidden love in a against the Great Depression. Finally free of glitter, heavy make up and amber contacts, Pattinson cuts a fine Jacob Jankowski, a veterinary medicine student who, following a family tragedy, loses everything including the opportunity to graduate from Cornell and finds himself part of the struggling Benzini Brothers Circus and amidst the volatile marriage of ringmaster August (Christoph Waltz) and glamorous equestrian Marlena (Reese Witherspoon).
Similar in narrative technique to The Notebook, Jacob’s story is narrated by present-narrator in his 80s looking back in one continuous flashback. While the chemistry between the leads fail to light a spark, RPattz seems to miss the opportunity to prove his acting chops in favour of an Edward-Cullen-jois-the-circus performance and at times the only endearing character you find yourself rooting for is Rosie (Tai the elephant), for the fans of Pattinson, this 2-hours-plus saga is a must-watch.
