As we hurtle towards the end of another year and get ready to deck the halls and usher in 2012, doubtless in the final stretch we will be bombarded with many a list of top events/albums/gadgets of the past year – from ‘Top 100 Albums of 2011′ to ’10 Events that Shook the World in 2011′ to ’50 Sexiest Girls Next Door of 2011’ – you name it, they will run it either on your TV screen or the pages of your glossy magazine. And it seems What the Trend – a HootSuite media company – has kicked off the trend in style analysing 207,518 Twitter trends and compiling a list of top Twitter trending topics of 2011.
To compile this report, the leading trends were grouped by topic (i.e. #jan25 and #egypt were both added to the Egypt Protest topic) in order to create Top 10 lists for movies, US TV shows, musical artists, sports leagues, and world news – as well as an overall list which included definitions for the varied mix of pop stars, holidays and sports.
While what we’ve talked tweeted about remains much the same (eg. Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga and football, apparently)the top 2011 trends on politics, entertainment and sports give a unique glimpse into the year gone by and the events that loomed large in global consciousness.
Here’s What the Trend’s handy graphic to showcase what we’ve tweeted about in 2011:
