I won’t say I know too much about her, I only knew few of her songs and I didn’t know she was the person that sang those songs until I watched her perform at the 2011 Nigerian Idols competition. I fell in love with her and I told myself that she’s one person I’d love to do a song with.

I heard about her death yesterday and I just refused to believe it. But now, I have to face the fact that we’ve lost yet another Legend of African Music.

Mama Christy (that’s what I like to call her) was a super talented beautiful woman.
Born Christy Uduak Essien on November 11, 1960, the late Nigerian Pop Diva was nicknamed the ‘First Lady of Song’.
She began her musical career in Secondary School singing at various clubs. In 1976 she joined the satirical NTA series Masquerade. Her short role in that popular sitcom shot her to limelight and in 1977 she launched a professional music career, aged 17. Many of her albums were hit records, but none came close to the success of her 1981 hit album ‘Ever Liked My Person’ produced by Lemmy Jackson.

I can’t believe I’m this sad, May her soul rest in peace….. Here is my favourite Mama Christy song and her Nigerian Idol Performance. Enjoy!!!
