In a courtroom in Kingston, Kartel and three co-perpetrators were convicted of murder. In August 2011, Kartel along with other men conspired to kill Clive “Lizard Williams” a 27-year-old businessman and local promoter. The juror discovered that Burton was lured by the rapper and his gang into Kartel’s home and then murdered with his body parts minced into pieces.
Vybz Kartel, whose real name is Adidja Palmer, is a popular Dancehall rapper known for his violent and X-rated lyrics. He was arrested in 2011 and charged with murder for luring Williams to his home to answer for two illegal guns that had gone missing. Williams disappeared and authorities never found his body, but recovered a text message from Vybz Kartel’s phone saying that the man was chopped up into “mincemeat.”
The high-profile trial was under tight security, with Jamaican police in riot gear protecting the courthouse and barricading streets outside.
The trial ended with the strangest turn, with a male juror arrested on Tuesday for trying to bribe the jury foreman into acquitting Kartel.
Hopefully the murder conviction for Vybz Kartel can serve as a wake-up call for the violent sort.Especially high-ranking personalities who believe they can evade the law.
“The artists are realizing that they cannot be a bad man and an entertainer” said Dennis Howard, author of the book Rantin from Inside the Dancehall.
Vybz Kartel’s, his fans have remained supportive despite the rapper’s murder conviction. Several fans were spotted holding signs in support of the rapper, who has strong followers among the Jamaican slums.
