Mombasa was named Africa’s Leading Destination at the 2016 World Travel Awards Africa & Indian Ocean Gala and Ceremony, on Saturday in Zanzibar, Tanzania.
Other nominees included Cape Town, South Africa; Durban, South Africa; El Gouna, Red Sea, Egypt; Johannesburg, South Africa; Luxor, Egypt; Marrakech, Morocco; Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt; Victoria Falls, Zambia; and Zanzibar, Tanzania.
Kenya’s second largest city after the capital Nairobi, a regional hub and historical trading centre located on the east coast of the country, Mombasa is an important regional tourism centre.
Since its inception in 1993,World Travel Awards is recognized globally as the ultimate hallmark of quality.
Former honourees include Marrakech in 2015, 14-time winner Cape Town, and two-time winner Sharm El Sheikh in 2007 and 2004.
