Ethical fashion is on the rise, and one of the latest names from African to join the movement is Mafrika. From Malawi to London, an exciting new fashion brand inspired by vibrant African prints and patterns, Mafrika aims to offer high quality products ethically sourced and produced in Malawi. A sustainable business which genuinely cares about people, Mafrika also aims to utilise local skills and generate employment while delivering the finest designs to the consumers.
Founder of Mafrika, Sadia launched the label after spending time in Malawi working for an ethical fashion charity. After 18 months of training, developing and managing a fashion workshop in a deprived area of the country, she was able to recognise the skills of the local tailors firsthand as well as seeing the need for employment and skills development.
Having worked in the UK fashion industry as a designer, pattern cutter and garment technologist since graduating in 2005, establishing Mafrika was the next step in Sadia’s fashion design career. With Mafrika, the designer aims to create dynamic, versatile and wearable garments which enhance the vibrant colours and patterns of African textiles.
All fabrics are sourced from local markets, working closely with a co-operative of female traders in order to support the industry and demand for African textiles.
The 13-piece debut collection by Mafrika sees a range of wearable, versatile looks for young, ethically conscious women from t-shirt dresses to crop top-midi skirt, crop-top-tailored trousers combos, boxy jackets and jumpsuits in vibrant prints and colours.
