The issue of domestic violence is one that we cannot shy away from and Emmy nominated actress Kerry Washington is adding her voice to speak against domestic violence.
Kerry Washington, who was named the 2014 Ambassador for the Allstate Foundation’s Purple Purse initiative has designed a special purse as a symbol of financial freedom for victims of domestic violence in a bid to encourage people to talk openly about domestic violence and financial abuse.
Kerry Washington was asked to do the domestic abuse public service announcement by The Allstate Foundation, which had already put into motion an initiative called “Purple Purse,” to raise awareness of domestic-abuse money matters. Washington said the facts and figures were such eye openers, she immediately agreed to serve as the campaign’s spokeswoman.
According to Kerry Washington, 98% of domestic violence victims suffer financial abuse, which includes controlling finances, making it difficult for a victim to leave an abuser.
“The purple purse is really a symbol for the economic strength of a woman to be able to take her purse strings back and take care of herself and her family. So it’s really exciting because it’s bringing attention around financial abuse,” Kerry Washington said.
The Allstate Foundation Domestic Violence Program raises awareness and changes societal attitudes about domestic violence and financial abuse. Through traditional and social media campaigns, The Allstate Foundation seeks to encourage people to talk openly about domestic violence and financial abuse while providing grants and resources to organizations working directly with survivors.
