South African megastar Lira started her US Tour today with a performance at World Cafe in Philadelphia. She is one of the most talented and famous people that you’ve never heard of (unless of course you’re from South Africa then you would have to have been living under a rock for the past 6 years not to have heard of her).
She has released 3 platinum albums and a multi-platinum live DVD that I can’t seem to stop watching. I had it playing at a party at my house yesterday and almost had to turn it off so people could focus on the party and not be mesmerized by what they were watching.
Her heady mixture of old school soul, spiced with enough contemporary twists has made her a super star in South Africa and the rest of the world had better get ready because Miss Lira says “I have big dreams”. Lira is not just a chart topping musical talent, she also a fashion icon and has graced the cover of probably every South African magazine and was profiled in Black Hair magazine. In the summer of 2010, LIRA joined a line up of stellar artists at the FIFA World Cup Kick-Off Concert including Alicia Keys, Shakira, Black Eyed Peas and John Legend, performing a rousing rendition of “Pata Pata,” a hit song originally recorded by the late Miriam Makeba.
Her US Tour will take her to New York, Los Angeles, Annapolis, and Washington, DC over the next week. If you live in any of these cities it would be criminal to not attend one of these concerts. Check out her website www.misslira.co.za for times and dates for her upcoming performances.
