It’s all about the midriff this season and your midriff will never be better dressed than when it’s wearing a peplum. It’s all about creating a spring silloutte with this surprisingly wearable trend and can be worn equally as succesfully as workwear or party wear. For those not in the know, a ‘peplum’ is a  short overskirt or ruffle attached at the waistline of a jacket, blouse, or dress.

Let’s see the trend on the catwalk:

Vera Wang

Alexander McQueen

Jason Wu

These absolutely stunning catwalk styles look ethereal and very high fashion but they can be easily translated into our wardrobes. The aim of the peplum trend is to bring attention to a slim waist by exaggerating the hips with frills and tailoring that sits off the body. As you can see at Alexander McQueen the emphasis is much more on frills rather than tailoring, but at Vera Wang it’s all about creating that slim waist effect by ensuring the material really juts out at the waist. The pink chiffon used at Jason Wu adds yet another level of femininity to the look, which is juxtaposed with a pair of bondage inspired heeled sandals ready for Spring.

Even the celebs have picked up on this trend, or rather their stylists have, and it seems like the peplum dress is a firm favourite among them:

Jennifer Hudson

Jennifer sticks to classic back as she shows off her slim figure. This dress enhances her curves and the no fuss design works well for a business like look.

Beyonce Knowles

Beyonce goes for a much more daring look in bright orange, but the dresses are very similar, a covered up look makes a nice change and can still be super sexy as Beyonce proves here

Kerry Washington

Kerry makes a fantastic style choice here by teaming a snow white dress with a pair of red statement platforms and a colourful clutch. Kerry keeps her hair slick and simple and matches her shoes with a dazzling red lip colour.

Liking the look? Here are some of the hottest peplum buys on the market:

FairTrue Peplum tops, Rare Topshop Blue Dress, Topshop Sweetheart Peplum Dress in Grey

1. With a peplum top make sure your trousers/skirt is slim line and fitted to avoid a frumpy look

2. A peplum is all about exaggerating your hips so if you have wide hips, make sure you choose a slimming block colour like black

3. Frills don’t suit everyone and there are lots of subtle peplum dresses on the market, if your not confident with this trend take baby steps until you are

Style Me!

One of my favourite peplum items on the market at the moment is this Katie Knot Back Peplum Dress by Boohoo. The bright colour and sexy open back design makes it a perfect choice for a night out on the town or wear with a pair of leggings for a more reserved occasion.

I would wear this dress with the leopard prints platforms that the model is wearing, also from boohoo, with this New Look Longline Bright Blue Clutch Bag and these Boohoo earrings for a dresses up look. How would you wear yours?
