We are used to Britain’s future queen Kate Middleton slammed by fashion critics over her conservative sartorial choices, but this time it is our beloved FLOTUS Michelle Obama who was criticised by Oscar de la Renta keen to shut down all claims of her being a fashionable First Lady.
While the First Lady never made any claims of being a fashionista, the designer’s enthusiasm to bash Michelle Obama’s style may stem from the fact that Michelle never sought his stylistic expertise like Laura Bush and Hillary Clinton. Unlike de la Renta’s conservative older fans, FLOTUS prefers to clothe herself in younger and edgier designers such as Jason Wu, Reed Krakoff and Tracy Reese.
The fashion designer even negated his claims of wanting to be on her list of preferred clothiers when he spoke at a fashion gala in Mexico City last Friday (Mar. 22).
Oscar de la Renta is not the first high fashion designer to pan Michelle Obama’s style as Vivienne Westwood recently referred to Obama’s style as “dreadful.”
