The power of social media in the #BringBackOurGirls campaign and movement cannot be underestimated. Social media has been responsible for the continuous awareness and exposure on this case where over 200 school girls were abducted by Boko Haram terrorists.
In the past three weeks of the abduction social media has erupted globally. Even though the rest of the world has been slow to catch up on the situation it has finally happened with people tweeting their concern and making use of the #BringBackOurGirls hashtag all over the world.
According to Time Magazine, “the map below shows how the story finally exploded on Twitter“.
Now that Boko Haram has taken responsibility for abducting the girls from their school with plans to sell them, the hashtag #BringBackOurGirls is spreading like wildfire and the Nigerian government is finally asking for international help to find them.
We continue to hope and pray that the girls are found and brought back home alive. Every tweet counts, every voice counts on social media because that is Nigeria’s most powerful tool right now.
