This year’s edition of Africa Fashion Week London bringing some of the best new talent and established designers from across Africa and the diaspora may be over but we are still dreaming of some of the standout looks from the runway during the three-day extravaganza. And since it’s fashion season, we just wanted to revisit some of our favourite looks from the AFWL runway.
From African power prints to shimmery sequins, structured cuts to sleek designs, African fashion talent brought their A game to the runway and it was no small feat to pick our favourite looks. But pick we did, and what’s more, the selection gave us just another excuse to peer frame after frame of fashion awesomeness.
So without further ado, here are our fifteen favourite looks from AFWL.
Aamaa a la Mode
Sheer and faux leather mix sexy top juxtaposed by princess like puffy tulle skirt in deceptively simple black – we say deceptive, as look close, you will see the first layering underneath the tulle of more vibrant African print material. We love this look!
It may look simple, but the slogan and the faux leather panel detail on the sleeves make this top/dress so now. If you’re blessed with legs for days, just throw it on accessories with high tops and a snapback for the sports luxe vibe; if you’re vertically challenged, it will still work as a top paired with leggings or jeggings.
Peek-a-boo lace paired with print A-line skirt with floral patterns. Ladylike elegance and yet cheeky playfulness all in one outfit. What’s not to love?
Ella and Gabby
Ella and Gabby is a Nigerian label on the rise – and rightfully so – especially for those who saw her timeless pieces during her 40-minute long solo show. This is one of our favourite looks with vibrant blue and yellow complemeting each other in this printastic dress.
Elegante by Tiannahstyling
This summer was all about side slits and the colour yellow, so before the season’s end it’s not too late to get your hands on this bold and bright beauty. What makes it even fiercer the one shoulder cut and the animal print and polka dot detailing down the slit. Hat optional but make sure you pair with sexy heels.
Fay Designs gives us colour-blocking 2.0 – with a difference. Embellished puff-ball sleeve purple top and yellow, green, purple skirt with hynotising swirling circle patterns. End result? A feminine silhouette with a vibrant colour scheme.
22-year-old Nigerian designer Mariam Afolabi’s latest collection is proof that African fashion need not always be about prints and patterns. Incidentally this two-piece in crisp, clean white with tailored trousers and structured peplum top is the only look on our list of top looks which features trousers.
Also seen on the Ella and Gabby runway, pussy bow blouses are back. This gorgeous sheer one in electric blue is perfectly paired with a black skirt featuring subtle blue patterns.
A killer dress with just the right amount of cleavage but a sexy low cut at the back. Blue and black complement each other magically and ther sheer detail is just right without pushing the boundaries.
Moofa brings us one of the hottest colours of the season coupled with one of the most timeless trends throughout the years with the blue lave two piece. Just a hint of skin with the cut out detail of the crop top, and this strikes the perfect balance between sexy and demure.
Who says black is boring? Otuedon proves it is anything but with this sports inspired cropped top and skirt combo in cotton. Sleek, summery and when accessorised with chunky jewellery and killer heels anything nut simple. Forget the little black dress, we will have the sexy black two-piece any day!
Rouge Vallari brings a whole of shimmer on to the runway with this sexy mini in gold and red and patterned sequined top in black. Keep the accessories to a minimum, don a pair of sexy shoes and you’re good to go.
We are not huge fans of feather but this two piece with the crisp white knitted top with blue feather detailing on the shoulders paired with the orange and blue patterned pencil skirt may just about convert us.
All golden and opulent. Thula Sindi wowed the audience with his impeccable pieces on the Friday evening show of Africa Fashion Week London – and one of our winning looks which gets gold stars is this beautiful metallic gold shirt with floral pattern paired with golden embroidered black sheer skirt which give us a glimps of brocade shorts underneath. Way to transition from the metallic trend of Summer 2013 to winter florals du jour.
Another electric blue look which proved our fsvourite came from Zarita Couture which came in the shape of a plain blue sleeveless top with a hint of print paired with a patchwork skirt mixing matching print detail with electric blue. Perfect way to mix colour and pattern for beginners.
