Fairies? Blood, you are just high!

Everyone needs to  check out the this gem of play  – The Playground @ the Intermission Theatre in Knightsbridge.

I went to see this last weekend and was blown away at the ingenuity of the intepretation of Shakespeare’s – A Midsummer’s Night Dream. The Playground, explores the effects of substance abuse and peer-pressure and is set in modern times. With a young cast from the Intermission Youth Theatre (IYT), led by Darren Raymond who wrote the play, they really bring to life Shakespeare’s work in a lively relatable way that will have you chortling in your seats.

Intermission Youth Theatre engages young people from London’s inner-city communities who are at risk of offending or who lack opportunity, in the form of drama workshops which culminate in staging a play inspired by Shakespeare and devised and performed by the members of the workshops.

Part of the remit of Intermission Theatre is to connect with the disaffected young people in our city through the arts in order to extend their creativity. Through these workshops we relate with honesty and integrity to young people living in our urban environment who may have a limited vision of what life can offer them.

If we can unlock potential, install self-confidence, introduce them to a broader vision and encourage their personal aspirations whilst in a place of safety and care, then we will have gone some way in achieving our vision.”

Darren Raymond the creative director is a great inspiration to the kids as he’s been in their shoes. He got a break when he got out of prison and started acting with a theatre group when he met Reverend Rob and his wife Janine who reignited his faith and got him involved with the group. They host several acting workshops which take place every first and third Saturday of the month from 2.00pm and are free to all young people. The sessions involve professional actors and include drama games, improvisation and text studies using dramatic works from classical to contemporary.

With the playground, Darren had the idea to produce a midsummer’s night dream as a play on substance abuse. His experience with drugs and the way they interfere with people’s lives and the impact on how people function led him to write this very witty play. Discussion and input from the cast turned it into masterpiece on dialogue. I cannot recommend it enough.  Tickets and information on the group can be found here – http://www.iyt.org.uk/
