Winners have begun to emerge at the 20th Screen Actors Guild Awards being held tonight. Our (and Hollywood’s, it seems) love affair with Kenyan actress Lupita Nyong’o continues as she wins the first award handed out at the awards for her first ever feature film performance of her career, in Steve McQueen’s harrowing drama 12 Years a Slave.

“Being recognized by your fellow actors is an honor of the highest order,” she said as she picked up the trophy for outstanding performance by a female actor in a supporting role. “Thank you, thank you, thank you, Steve McQueen.”

Actor and 30 Seconds to Mars band member Jared Leto won the SAG award for outstanding performance by an actor in a supporting role for his performance playing a transgender woman with AIDS in Dallas Buyers Club. Leto dedicated his honor to those living with AIDS and HIV, and said he shared it with the member of the transgender community.

Hollywood veteran Helen Mirren won the award for outstanding female actor in a television movie or miniseries for HBO’s Phil Spector.
Julia Louis-Dreyfus won the SAG award for outstanding female actor in a TV comedy role for HBO’s Veep while Ty Burrell won the trophy for outstanding male actor in a TV comedy role for ABC’s Modern Family which won its fourth consecutive honor for top TV comedy series.

What are your thoughts on the early winners and Lupita a nyong’o and Jared Leto’s Oscar chances?
