Meet 23-year old, Birmingham born and raised MC, singer and producer Melesha O Garro (aka Lady Leshurr), who’s debut single, ‘Lego’, is due for release in November this year. With comparisons ranging from ‘a female Busta Rhymes’ through to ‘the UK’s answer to Nicki Minaj’, Lady Leshurr is being talked about as arguably the most exciting female rapper to emerge from the UK urban scene since Ms Dynamite’s arrival in 2001.
To date Leshurr has successfully garnered fans, both here and internationally, through three well received independently released mixtapes and a string of YouTube clips full of dry Brummie wit and rap hit take-offs (such as her recent cover of the Chris Brown/Busta Rhymes collaboration ‘Look At Me Now’ which received more than 100,000 hits within hours of it going live on worldstarhiphop.com). She has featured on tracks with various UK urban heavyweights, such as Tinie Tempah, Wiley and Ms Dynamite, has been earmarked by Mike Skinner in The Guardian as an artist to watch, and has stopped a number of audiences in their tracks with her live performances on stages varying form Hoxton’s ‘I Luv Live’ night to Glastonbury’s ‘Introducing’ stage.
Malesha started honing her skills early. She wrote her first rap when she was six years old, using a phone’s voicemail to record it. By 11 she was writing full rap tracks to the beats of her elder brother’s US hip hop records, and by 12 she was Djing and rapping over UK garage, grime and drum n bass.
This young talent is sure to make her mark on the UK music scene.
