Gabrielle Union in a recent interview with The View spoke about the traumatic incident she faced years ago. The Being Mary Jane actress divulged to Oprah in 2012, that she was raped at gun point at the age of 19.
“When I was 19, I had a summer job at a shoe store. One night, as my coworker and I were closing up, a man robbed the shop and raped me at gunpoint. Afterward, I was in shock. I just couldn’t believe that something like that could happen.”
She admitted on The View, that the love she received from family and friends helped her recover from the hurt at first but she got resentful and tired of the attention.
“I hated the cloak of victimhood,” she continued. “I realized they were going to allow me to be a victim, and not succeed and not achieve my goals.”
Gabrielle Union has been a tough cookie right from the start, she tries not to portray herself as weak on the live show. “I wasn’t raised to be coddled. I was raised to be an independent woman, standing on my own two feet, and that’s the road I opted to take.”
In 2013 she won the Fierce and Fearless award at the ESSENCE magazine’s sixth annual Black Women in Hollywood Pre-Oscars Luncheon.
The movie star got engaged to NBA player Dwayne Wade in December 2013 after dating for four years. Excited Gabrielle took to her Instagram to share the news with the caption.”Sooooo this happened…#Yessss @dwaynewade.”
Wade also shared the news on Instagram, ” She said Yes!!! @gabunion.” Wade wrote.
