To celebrate the launch of the debut album, Efya will embark on a nationwide tour subsequently followed by an international one.
Here at FAB we were fortunate enough to get an interview with the gorgeous lady herself.
FAB: What got you interested in wanting to be an artist in the first place? what was that defining moment where you felt this is what you wanted to do?
Efya: It just kind of fell into my lap, I got a shot with Stars Of The Future and after that I gradually more & more knew this was what I wanted to do. The defining moment may have been when I put out “Little Things” and people loved it. I always have loved singing, although I used to want to be a film director more.
FAB: Which artists give you inspiration for your music?
Efya: At this moment, Beyonce, Janelle Monae, Jill Scott, India Arie, Drake. I also like Nigerian artists like Waje, Tiwa Savage & WizKid.
FAB: How would you define the sound behind your new album Love Genesis? (That is set to be released this February).
Efya: It’s a lot of Afro Soul, I didn’t record a lot of it live, but I definitely put my soul into it.
FAB: What were your inspirations when you were developing this album?
Efya: A little here, a little there. A lot has happened over the years and I put all those emotions together for this project. It’s a very emotional project.
FAB: When you are writing a song, do you always draw from your own experiences or do you sometimes pull ideas from people around you?
Efya: I can draw from anywhere. It’s usually from myself but I also draw from the people and things that happen around me.
FAB: You have already released “This Is Not The Album” which is a compilation of all your singles. What made you do this?
Efya: I had a lot of music out there in the air and I wanted the fans to have one defined body of work, so I decided to compile it and put it out as a free album before my actual album dropped.
FAB: Listening to your music, there isn’t just one type of sound I would associate you with, so I would like to know how would you define your sound?
Efya: I don’t trap my sound under just one genre, I call it “Efya music” because I wouldn’t want to sell myself as one kind of artist and stop myself from being able to make good music if it has a different sound. My sound comes from my feelings and there are so many different genres and sounds out there that I cant afford to box myself in, with how I express my feelings. Also I’m still perfecting my own sound.
FAB: Are you very passionate about helping others and giving back to the community?
Efya: Absolutely. We give back when we can, I’m involved with establishments that aid cancer patients, new mothers as well as orphans. We hope we can do more with time.
