Ninja Tune, a British independent record label founded by DJs Matt Black and Jonathan More, better known as Coldcut announced last night that they had signed on singer/songwriter Kelis who is set to be releasing her newest album Food on the 28th April 2014.

Food is a soul record that’s as raw and alternative as it is classic. Ninja were blown away by the record, and leapt at the chance to work with the legend that is Kelis, an artist who has always had a forward-thinking sound and oozed style.

Kelis says of the signing: “I’m really happy to be partnering with Ninja Tune on my new record. This is the album I’ve wanted to make for a long time and I want the team around me to be as excited and energetic about it as I am. I’m also very happy to be working with some of the most creative people in the industry.

For a star who had it all from mainstream to songs that broke top ten records as well as became anthems across the world, you would think signing onto an independent level would be a step down. But for a woman with vision and a passion for her art – calculated risk such as these turn out to be the best option in the long run.
