Leonardo DiCaprio, one of our finest actors, is about to turn 40—and he still hasn’t won an Oscar yet. Movie after movie, year after year and one spectacular performance after another Leonardo DiCaprio leaves the annual Academy Awards with his hands empty. But we are hopeful that is finally about to change.
Leonardo is an Academy deserved winner for movies like Titanic, Blood Diamond, The Departed, Revolutionary Road, Inception, and Django Unchained. But all the past decades he’s gotten nothing.
CNN seemingly gave away a spoiler for the upcoming Oscars and Leonardo fans (FAB Magazine included) have gone crazy with hope – because otherwise this will just be a cruel act from CNN. Here’s what they did – Monday night, CNN anchor Ted Rowlands took viewers on a tour of the Chicago factory responsible for those pretty gold naked statues given out at the Oscars. At the end of the segment, a nameplate meant for the bottom of the Oscar was shown and it had Leo’s name on it.
The engraved plate reads: “Academy Award to Leonardo DiCaprio/ Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role/ ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’/ 2013.” The segment ended quickly after that, leading viewers to believe that CNN just accidentally revealed that Leo would be winning the Best Actor award come March 2.
But unfortunately, this doesn’t mean our darling Leonardo has won anything (even though he deserves it year after year). Any avid Academy Awards watcher knows voting doesn’t even begin until today, Friday, Feb. 14. Meaning not even one vote has been cast yet for anyone, so there is no way we have a winner yet in any category. Also nameplates are made for every nominee. So of course Leo has one already engraved.
We continue to hold this to our chest however because Leonardo Dicaprio’s performance in Wolf of Wall Street was phenomenal (As expected!). Sorry, Leo fans. You’ll have to wait a bit longer to see if your boy gets his prize. Oscars night is not until Sunday 2 March, when Ellen DeGeneres will host a star-studded ceremony in Los Angeles. Leo is nominated for Best Actor alongside Christian Bale for American Hustle, Bruce Dern for Nebraska, Chiwetel Ejiofor for 12 Years a Slave and Matthew McConaughey for Dallas Buyers Club.
Matthew McConaughey has been widely-tipped to win Best Actor after he was awarded the Screen Actors Guild’s Best Actor accolade. The 44-year old won a Golden Globe and Critics Choice Award for the same role as AIDS sufferer Ron Woodroof.
