The annual Metropolitan Museum of Art’s annual Costume Institute Gala in New York City was held on May 6, 2013. This year’s theme “PUNK: Chaos to Couture” gave Hollywood’s biggest celebs a chance to play dress up with varying results. From faux-hawks to lashings of leather, from smoky eyes to dark berry lips, let’s see what the red carpet delivered.
FAB Couture
Kristen Stewart
Kristen Stewart pulls off this bold Stella McCartney jumpsuit in vampish style and aces the Met red carpet. We love the matching red eyeshadow too.
Anne Hathaway
Oscar winner Ms Hathaway goes gold with her recent Oscar win and platinum with her new do and nails the glam punk look in a vintage Valentino gown. Can she put a foot wrong these days?
Jennifer Lawrence
Embellished, ankle-length, black Dior and red lips takes Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence to the heights of Gothic glam. And we love it.
Katy Perry
Anything this lady does, she does with sass and style and this regal Dolce & Gabbana ensemble with an optional tiara is no different. Katy Perry, you rock… and rule!
Rooney Mara
Dark red lips, plunging neckline and just the right amount of tantalising flesh. Rooney Mara aces the red carpet once again.
Nicole Richie
Another vision in white. We love the vintage look Topshop dress and the silver grey do.
Minka Kelly
Minka was definitely one of the best dressed of the night with this purple, beaded lace gown by Carolina Herrera.
Nina Dobrev
Lashings of lace and leather, despite a confused ensemble between a skirt and pants have never looks so good.
Sarah Jessica Parker
Gotta love SJP! Only she can pull off this voluminous Giles Deacon gown paired with a Philip Treacy headpiece and a pair of velvet, thigh-high boots by Louis Vuitton. Quirky couture at its best!
Lauren Santa Domingo
On paper it all reads a bit too much – puffy sleeves, embroidery, fishnet collar, sparkly necklace and a spiked choker but somehow Met Gala co-chair and founder of Moda Operandi, Lauren Santa Domingo works this look.
Amber Heard
Amber looks red hot in this peek-a-boo, floor-length lace Pucci and definitely makes the best dressed list!
Jessica Alba
Jessica Alba strikes again in this peek-a-boo in a knockout leather dress by designer Tory Burch – glam punk with a whole lot of gorgeous!
Coco Rocha
Coco Rocha takes a walk on the wild side with this animal print dress by Emanuel Ungaro – we are not sure whether it is the embellishments or the sleek side split or her smokey eye make up with her sharp fringe, we are liking this.
Kerry Washington
The D’jango actress rocked the red carpet in this pretty purple dress and black leather gloves.
Cameron Diaz
Cammy never looked this good in Stella McCartney. In a cloaked, sapphire blue gown, the actress truly dazzled on the red carpet in one of this season’s hottest colours.
Nicki Minaj, take note. This is how to bare just about enough flesh in glam style. Rita Ora sizzles in this asymmetrical Thakoon dress.
Kelly Osbourne
There is quirky, then there is Kelly. It seems the Fashion Police presenter has got glam punk in her DNA; we fail to think of another name who could pull off this look with such pizzazz.
FAB Cute
Taylor Swift
Dressed in a black J. Mendel gown with sheer side panels, Taylor looks a cutiepie and try as hard as she may, a million years away from punk or edgy.
Anna Wintour
May the Gods of high fashion not strike us but we fail to see how the High Priestress of Fashion meets the punk theme in this floral Chanel number. But shhh….
Nicki Minaj
Sexy rapper looks much tamer than her kookier red carpet looks of yesteryears, but this midnight blue gown looks more prom than punk.
Ashley Greene
Ashley looks positively Victorian in this gold and black Marchesa gown, but we can’t help but feel it makes her look a little thick around the midriff.
Kate Upton
Goddess-like in green, model Kate Upton looks gorgeous in this emerald green dress by designer Diane von Furstenberg but we fail to see how this meets the theme.
Heidi Klum
She may look a million dollar but Heidi Klum goes for bridal over punk in this strapless beaded gown by Marchesa.
Katie Holmes
More Grecian goddess than glam puss in this backless white Calvin Klein halter gown with a flowing train, Katie Holmes dazzles on the red carpet but falls short of our best dressed list.
Jennifer Lopez
Va va voom! Clad in a figure hugging, back baring animal print dress, JLo does look phwoar! Just how well she aces the theme is up for debate.
Gwyneth Paltrow
Sugar and spice, all things nice. Gwyneth shines in this hot pink Valentino gown. Cute, but we’ve definitely seen better from the actress.
Uma Thurman
The rich green and the flowing fish tail could have worked if it were not for the odd gigantic bows on Uma’s shoulders.
FAB Chaos – What where they thinking?
Beyonce
Honorary Met Gala chair Beyonce got it all so wrong with this hot black and orange Kenzo dress, accessorised with over-the-elbow gloves and a sizzling pair of boots – more gypsy woman chic than glam punk.
Amanda Seyfried
May be a Givenchy, but this print dress looks like Granny’s upholstery and fails to do Amanda any favours, and yup, it says more chaos than couture to us.
Kim Kardashian
Oh no, Kim! You finally get the all clear from Ms. Wintour to set foot at the Met Gala and this is what happens? The pregnant reality star certainly ain’t blooming in this floral gown by Riccardo Tisci. And a dress that comes with gloves and matching footwear? Not exactly couture, dahling!
Madonna
Given her age and ’80s punk credentials, we would have thought Madonna would nail this theme but alas not with studded plaid blazer by Givenchy designer Riccardo Tisci paired with…. no trousers! One thing’s for sure – you can never blame the lady for not trying too hard.
Miley Cyrus
A black fishnet dress by Marc Jacobs and a hair-raising do from Miley Cyrus. A for effort and F for red carpet fail.
Dakota Fanning
This sheer black Rodarte dress with oddly shaped angel wings at the back does no favours for the actress. Come on, Dakota, glam punk is more than just black, sheer and a pair of wings, or a weird ensemble throwing all three together.
Gisele Bundchen
No, Gisele, a rock pose and a barely there black mini dress do not glam punk make. Next!
Emma Watson
The usually well turned out actress disappoints in this cut-out Prabal Gurung – a little too much train for a little too much flesh. Nope, we don’t get it, either.
Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen
Ooooo….kay…. While Mary-Kate dresses up in a fur-line bathrobe, Ashley donned an absurd orange ensemble. The jury is still out.
Karolina Kurkova
The only excuse for this nightmarish ensemble? Either she got dressed in the dark without a full length mirror, or she is too young to understand the intricacies of glam punk.
Jessica Biel
Try as hard as we may, we are not liking this half dress half fishnet pants look by Giambattista Valli. Sorry, Jessica!
