Nigerian brand Maki Oh is one brand that we love to look out for. With series of amazing collections and recently being part of the 30 semi-finalists for the LVMH’s Young Fashion Designer prize, the young brand is set to grow beyond all expectations.
Amaka Osakwe, creative director of Maki Oh, always premises her collections on a story, and this one, she explained, came from her imagining a woman at her mirror, reciting the song lyrics, “Tell me I’m the only one, even if you choke.” The collection toyed with themes of madness and un-madness, love and anti-love, and other states that fluctuate and are a matter of perception.
Again present in this collection is her love for hand-dyed African fabric Adire. With such an easy collection we can see ourselves rushing to get our hands on several pieces—a pair of track pants, a soft silk blouse, high-waist pencil skirts, ankle-strap sandals, chic blouses, and colorblock frocks, a lean tailored dress with some slouch to it. She takes her love for African prints a step further and creates her own traditional Nigerian aso-oke material with Lurex thread; pulling luxe gobs of fringe out of selvedge; and translating prints, such as her Yoruba translation of those song lyrics, into hand-appliquéd lettering.
