Scheduled for Saturday 13 October 2012, taking place at Hotel Russell in central London, the second edition of Africa Rocks Expo is a one-day event that aims to get people to see Africa differently by promoting African culture and talent.

As part of Black History Month celebrations, this year’s Expo will celebrate the best that Africa has to offer, from the continent’s customs and film, to fashion and music through to arts, investment opportunities and its inspirational people as well as shining a light on new talent, providing a showcase for up and coming designers and performers.

Africa Rocks 2012 will feature two fashion shows, providing opportunities for emerging and established designers to show off their creations. There will also be live music, poetry, African dance and comedy, including exciting new talent, all hosted by funny man Lateef Lovejoy.

Seminars and panel discussions will run throughout the day, with invited/confirmed guests include Olympians Mo Farah and Christine Ohuruogu, Paralympian Ade Adepitan, TV psychologist Dr Funke Baffour and founder of Identity Drama School and Identity Agency Group, Femi Tay Oguns.

The event is being organised by Chinnelle Anichebe and Amaechi Echedolu, two young entrepreneurs who set up their social enterprise The Culture Initiative in 2010 to tackle misconceptions and myths about Africa and other cultures and bring people together.

‘This year we really wanted to encourage new talent,’ explains Chinnelle. ‘There’s so much to celebrate. And with such great speakers and performers on board, we hope everyone who comes will be inspired to aim higher.’

Africa Rocks also aims to fill a gap in the market by focusing on supporting small businesses and entrepreneurs. ‘There are so many trade fairs and events out there,’ says Amaechi, ‘but they’re often focused on big business and/or on a narrow theme. We recognised that there are lots of up and coming African entrepreneurs doing really interesting things and we wanted to give them somewhere they could come to get inspiration, to network and make contacts and to promote their products and services.’
