Super Bowl 2014 has come and gone – complete with the football, fun and phenomenal celebrity performances. And while doubtless the water cooler talk in the office may be about the game or the score, at FAB HQ we are having a fabulously fun day time-wasting researching on the internet watching the halftime ads. After an hour of hard graft, here we bring you our top five ads of last night’s Super Bowl.

Axe “Make Love, Not War”

Screen Shot 2014-02-03 at 16.39.44

Axe tugged on our heart strings with a dashing cast of dictators and soldiers playing against type. Not only does this ad shatter our long established value systems and prejudices but also drives the title message home with beautiful imagery and a superb score.

Volkswagen “Wings”

Screen Shot 2014-02-03 at 16.43.08

Volkswagen delivered on belly laughs with this commercial which works on the theory that every time a VW car hits 100,000 miles, a VW engineer gets their wings. Then come rainbows; you have gotta really see this to be in on the joke.

H&M David Beckham Bodywear

Screen Shot 2014-02-03 at 16.50.12

David. Beckham. Naked. Need we say more?

Coca Cola “America the Beautiful”

Screen Shot 2014-02-03 at 16.54.55

Coca Cola aced this with the “America the Beautiful” commercial – another that tugged at the heartstrings, with its patriotic and multicultural feel with this multilingual rendition of “America the Beautiful” and a sequence of heartwarming shots of the country’s scenic beauty and diverse people.

Maserati Ghibli

While this one may be a slow burner for some, what wins it for us is the fabulous cinematography and the delightful little Oscar nominated actress Quvenzhané Wallis. The haunting images with Wallis’s tale of giants together makes this a powerful ad.

And the puppy that sneaked in:

Budweiser “Puppy Love”

Screen Shot 2014-02-03 at 17.08.18

Budweiser brought us #bestbuds with this adorable puppy, guaranteed to get a few million aaaws – and counting. Hence, we just had to let him sneak in at six.
