Kiernen Forbes known for his stage name- AKA is a South African rapper from Manzi. AKA’s rise to fame boomed right after opening up for NEYO in January 2013, for the ‘Jealousy’ smash hit of 2012 which was nominated for a Best Single of the Year and Best Video of the year for the Metro FM awards in 2013.
He followed that up with opening for Kanye West on Feb 2nd 2013 and the following week he performed with D’Banj.
It was in early 2005 when nominated for the Kora Award while with the hip hop group Entity, that AKA’s songs in the music industry first began to bloom. He later won the Best New Comer at the Hype Awards 2009.
MTV Base spotted him as a rising star in the SA hip hop scene. As an upcoming artist, he was chosen by MTV Base to showcase his talent on a show called ‘MTV Base Brand New Artist’, which featured AKA in December 2010.
He defined his performance with Rick Ross as a supporting act in the Cape Town concert in 2010 as his most memorable performance yet. AKA has also featured on the ESPN 2010 Annual Basketball Event, he was the official MC and Host of the MTV Base’s MAMA 2010 Private Media Event, as well as supporting act at the Rize Concert 2011.
In September 2011 AKA released his Debut Album ‘Altar Ego’ which features hits like ‘I want it all’, ‘Victory Lap’ and ‘All I know’. “Victory Lap”, released in early 2011 was number one for six consecutive weeks on the Metro FM Top 40, making him one of the most sought after urban acts in the country. This earned him a performance alongside Kid Cudi on Feb 23rd 2013 in Johannesburg at the Blackberry 10 launch and he won the Metro FM Best Pop Single at the same time.
Kiernan Forbes was previously known for his part in the Hip Hop group called ‘Entity’ a rap group formed with his fellow school mates but unfortunately he has gone his separate way, allowing the spotlight to shine on his solo career. Now the rapper better known as AKA is a Winner of The Channel O Music Video Award and 4X Metro FM Award Best Produced, Best Hip-Hop, Best Pop Single and Best New Comer!
