Only two months ago we brought you fab images from Vlisco’s latest striking ‘Funky Grooves’ collection; and recently fashionistas, press members, dignitaries and VIPs were treated to seeing these visual treats on the runway with three exclusive fashion shows – a first for the 166-year old Dutch company known for its luxury fashion fabrics.
The first show hosted by super-comedian Jedi was held at the Federal Palace Hotel in Victoria Island, Lagos on 2 September, where the stunning Funky Grooves fabrics were simply draped and tied on the models for the first catwalk, and then shown as completed outfits from Vlisco in-house designers in the second and third catwalk. Lagos designers Ojoma Ocheja Sanusi of AEEA (Aesthetically Eclectic Eccentric African) and Caterina Bortolussi of Kinabuti (www.kinabuti.com) presented their own fabulous Funky Grooves designs in the fourth and fifth catwalks. There was more in the form of entertainment though as Project Fame season three winner Chidinma belted out her hit songs.
Next was Abuja, where the Vlisco Funky Grooves fashion show took place on 4 September, at the Sheraton Hotel. Abuja designers Risikat Ismail Amao of Senegal Embroidery, Taofik Yahyah of TFK Couture and Adenike Adeleke of Crystal Fabrics stunned the jam-packed crowd with their fantastic Funky Grooves creations. Abuja comedian, Dr Ayuba hosted the show and provided hilarious comedy, whilst entertainment was provided by traditional dance troupe Blackbones, new rapper MoEasy and special guest star Darey Art Alade, who performed a medley of his hits and serenaded the ladies.
And on 11 September, at the Xscape Centre in Port Harcourt, three designers from the East showcased their beautiful Vlisco Funky Grooves designs to a packed audience: Oreva Okowa of Signature Secrets in Asaba; Mosun Ebodaghe of Mosun Couture in Port Harcourt and Nkechi Enuma-Chukura of NK Classics in Asaba. Entertainment was provided by the show’s host Arinze Baba, and dance group Kilali.
The Vlisco Funky Grooves collection draws from the company’s rich design heritage, and was inspired by global urban culture and couture craftsmanship. The collection of fashion fabrics includes wax-prints and Luxury Editions, and there is a matching line of bags and accessories.
Funky Grooves is a collection of contrasts, with edgy street wear influences reinterpreted through a lens of pure glamour. The collection is yet another expression of Vlisco’s aim of incorporating various surprising elements from around the world into its designs. The Funky Grooves collection is a melting pot of ideas, using new colours to update Vlisco’s heritage designs, and classic Vlisco techniques to create the latest looks.
Raw, geometric lines, traditional wrap shapes, bold metallic studs and edgy industrial hues come together to create a modern vibe. The collection’s colours range from earthy browns, brassy golds and bronzes, to brick reds and shocking pinks, and fresh acid blues and greens.
Luxury Editions & accessories
The Luxury Editions line features exclusive details, such as brass studs, shimmering gold Lurex thread, metallic sequins, sparkly Swarovski crystals and intricate broderie anglaise embroidery. The accessories collection includes handbags and belts with luxurious finishes such as handcrafted stitching, gold rivets, fun fabric insets and fashionable zipper details.
