The 2014 MTV VMAs had a lot of anticipation and finally, on Sunday 24th of August, 2014, the MTV VMAs was delivered to us on a platter of awesomeness. There were so many things that were memorable moments that we can’t stop talking about.
Last night Twitter practically shut down because of Beyonce’s knockout performance – but that’s only one of the few reasons we won’t forget this year’s VMAs in a hurry.
Check out all the 6 moments from the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards that will definitely be on our lips for a while to come:
There is no doubt in our minds that Beyonce really is the current queen of music – we don’t call her Queen Bee for nothing – but if there ever was any doubt in your mind about how much Beyonce is a FAB entertainer, Mrs. Carter shut it down last night.
Performing all her songs off her newest album in just 15 minutes, Beyonce basically went from singer to mother to wife to feminist to sexy and more in a matter of minutes. The performance was crazy, and making it even crazier were the reactions Blue Ivy kept on giving as well as a kiss from Jay Z at the end of Beyonce’s performance. Forget the Obama’s this is the family everyone is talking about right now.
It was surprising enough that Miley Cyrus won the award for ‘Video Of The Year’ beating someone like Beyonce who was also nominated for her ‘Drunk In Love’ video, but what really surprised us all was the acceptance speech.
It has been a year of twerking-tongue sticking selfies and more for Miley Cyrus, but when it gets down to it Miley Cyrus is environment conscious it seems. After being annoced as the winner of 2014 Video of the Year, Miley let a homeless man accept the award so he could speak about his situation and raise awareness for a good cause.
“All over this city I’ve cleaned your hotel rooms. I’ve been an extra in your movies. I’ve been an extra in life,” the man said. “Though I may have been invisible to you on the streets, I have a lot of the same dreams that brought you here tonight. Los Angeles, entertainment capitol, has the largest percentage of homeless youth in America. The music industry will make over $7 billion this year and outside these doors are 54,000 who have no place to call home. If you want to make a powerful change in the world right now, please join us by going to Miley‘s Facebook page. A dream you dream alone is only a dream, but a dream you dream together is reality.”
Common Asks For A Moment Of Silence For Ferguson
In between all the fun and glamour we were reminded of the passing of unarmed Michael Brown who was shot 6 times by a police officer. With everyone still screaming for justice and investigations still going on, rapper Common asked for a moment of silence to remind everyone that they must keep asking for justice.
It was a somber moment that called for deep reflection. In light of the events in Ferguson, Common talks about using our voices for justice and change. He takes a moment for peace and for Mike Brown. He then announces the nominees for Best Hip Hop Video.
A Tribute For Robin Williams
Yet another moment of sober reflection was when the tribute for actor and comedian Robin Williams was given. Having touched a lot of lives in the entertainment industry and in the world, there was not a dry eye on the screen or even from people sitting in their homes streaming the VMAs live. There was a photo montage to honour the late actor.
Nicki Minaj’s Wardrobe Malfunction
The MTV VMAs has had its share of wardrobe malfunctions and the 2014 edition was no different with Nicki Minaj as its victim. Nicki Minaj had to quickly cover herself with a shocked look on her face while realizing she was in the midst of a wardrobe malfunction during the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards.
The 31-year-old entertainer appeared to have a split in her dress in the front and she had to cover it up with her hands. We’re glad she was able to keep it together! Nicki was on stage to perform her song “Bang Bang” alongside her collaborators Ariana Grande and Jessie J to open the show.
She spent the rest of the show holding onto her dress for modesty.
Katy Perry Came As Britney Spears From 2001
The red carpet was another place where the stars shined and one person particularly stood out at this year’s VMAs – Katy Perry. The moment you realize you have seen Katy Perry’s outfit choice for the 2014 MTV VMAs before is also the moment you realize that she is really just coming to the show as Britney Spears from 2001.
We see you Katy Perry – and we know what you are doing. Katy Perry made her grand entrance in a jean dress alongside rapper Riff Raff at the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards. The 29-year-old singer wore a dress that was a replica of Britney Spears‘ infamous jean dress from the 2001 American Music Awards. Riff Raff even wore a jean suit just like Justin Timberlake did!
“@britneyspears I’ll show u my best impression on the red carpet at the VMA’s tomorrow… Wait for it bb,” Katy wrote on Twitter that night before. She later added, “I must admit my outfit is a result of my love for nostalgia and my tumblr addiction #THISISHOWWEDOVMAS.”
