The opening of Bunmi Koko’s SS12 collection christened ‘Allure of the Sirens’ was a sweet roaring voice bellowing from the darkness. The lights turned up only for us to realise the sound was coming from Tallia Storm, whose small statue but larger than life voice fitted perfectly in the Bunmi Koko AW11 kaleidoscopia dress she wore to serenade the new collection in.

‘Allure of the Sirens’ is inspired by the alluring nature of the ocean and the juxtaposition between the seductive yet dangerous nature of the Sirens in Greek myths.  This season models were transported from ocean and sky blues, turquoise, navy and indigo hues-to hot tropical shades of coral, lemon yellow, burnt orange, pink salmon to lush soft whites and nudes. It was definitely clear to see Bunmi Olaye’s soft, calm and reflective approach to this season.

Feminine, elegant shapes and silhouettes were in abundance in free flowing to sheer, translucent fabrics that reveal yet conceal. Structured bodices and right on trend maxi kaftans, pleated skirts and palazzo trousers also featured.  Inspired by the navy were strong clean lined pieces, while ropes, knots and pleats throughout the collection continued the sailing motif.  The allure and danger theme was evident in the clever combinations of hard and soft in leather and soft chiffon, silk crepe and satin. The laser cut neoprene and organza pieces alongside  the delicate reef like lace embroideries were stunning to watch.
