The 42nd American Music Awards saw a host of celebrities grace the red carpet on Sunday 23 November, and as always there was many fashion flops as fashion fabness. From Jennifer Lopez to Nicki Minaj, we cast our eyes on some of the best, worst and the jury-is-out looks and here is what we and you (our Instagram fashion jury had to say).
Jessie J rocked up in an androgynous all white trouser suite with her raven hair mid-parted and falling over her shoulders. Nothing offensive here, but we’ve seen her rock similar looks so many times, we are kind of bored.
Kate Beckinsale, also in white, looked every inch the Hollywood star that she is with this long cut-out white Kaufmanfranco gown with a plunging neckline accessorised with a red clutch and a statement Bulgari diamond neckpiece.
Rita Ora was as aware as we were it was not the Oscars and the bright yellow Zac Pose dress might have been a tad too dramatic for the AMAs (“I know it’s not the oscars but why not?!!” the singer wrote on her Instagram) but she decided she wanted to be the belle of the ball, and boy did she succeed!
Rita wasn’t the only one going for the belle look. Check out Miss America Kira Kazanstev’s crop top and ball skirt combo. She looked dazzling!
The Queen of HipHop Soul, Mary J. Blige worked the sparkles, the tassels and the subtle cut out detailing and was a picture of sophistication on the red carpet in this Mark Zunino black number.
While we quite liked Selena Gomez’s all grown up sexy sleek style in black Armani Privé , our Instagram followers were not too convinced with one, @nicolebonner2013 simply commenting “No”
Fergie clearly got the thigh-high-slit memo as she flashed her legs and piled on the metal with a metal plate belt and halterneck in this Halston Heritage dress.
Nicki Minaj keeps giving us fab red carpet event after event with her grown-up style and this Alexander Wang 2015 look straight off the runway was another winner. Wish she had donned a more adventurous pair of heels though.
American actress of Zimbabwean descent Danai Gurira got major brownie points from us for this vibrant green asymmetric cut piece from Naeem Khan’s Resort 2015 collection and fro clenching at the waist with a blue belt to highlight her figure.
It may be Versace but it definitely wasn’t one of Heidi Klum’s finest fashion moments. While baring her enviable figure, this crop top, skirt with a side slit look joined with coordinated pink stripes didn’t really pack a punch.
Low cut and thigh high seemed to be the order of the day for many celebs and Jordin Sparks was no exception in this high shine floor-length Halston Heritage dress which she accessorised with black Dolce & Gabbana sandals. We loved her Orit Mesica jewellery too. We loved Jordin’s curls; however our IG follower @stylitagh commented, “She needed a ponytail with that dress.” What do you think?
Feeling so glam in my @orkamesicajewelry! #AMAS ✨
Orange is the New Black actress Uzo Aduba also opted for black with a below-the-knee Vivienne Westwood dress. While we like the fact that she kept it simple and let her smoky eyes and red lips do the talking, the whole look was quite safe. The Giuseppe Zanotti heels on the other hand are a whole different story.
Uzo’s OITNB co-star Taylor Schilling kept her hemline even shorter than most with this flirty monochrome Vionnet dress which she paired with gorgeous red Brian Atwood shoes. Wish she had gone for a stronger evening look with her makeup to really complete the look.
If we had any doubts that Taylor is now a fully fledged fashion icon in the making, swapping cute princess gowns of yesteryears for edgier looks on red carpets across the world, AMAs 2014 has totally put them to rest as Taylor stepped out in a custom Michael Kors emerald green number with a cut-out bodice and illusion detailing. We wish she would ditch the fringe and cat eyes too and opt for a more fashion-forward beauty look as seen on her recent Wonderland cover.
Well, you can take the girl off the runway… Kendall Jenner made the red carpet her runway in this Yigal Azrouël black, white, grey dress cut all the way up to her hips, showing off black briefs.
Oooh lala! Isn’t Kylie Jenner growing up fast? The younger Jenner showed some sking in a sexy Alexandre Vauthier silk burgundy dress with aplunging neckline and a thigh high slit. We loved her choice of chunky gold jewellery, burgundy lips and messy bun too.
Sorry Khloe, but we reckon the junior Kardashian was the least impressive of the clan on the red carpet in a black Versace mini-dress. We didn’t quite get the asymmetrical hem, with the double circle design on one side; neither did we get the boring old black courts. On the plus side, Khloe’s makeup looked fab as ever.
Charlie XCX scored major style points in this Vivienne Westwood Red Label black dress which fit her figure perfectly and showed off just the right amount of skin with off-the-shoulder draping. We love Charlie’s red lippy too!
Another star who opted for all black was Christina Milian in this flattering Cheyenne Kimora racer back dress.
Actress Elizabeth Banks rocked up in an orange Peter Pilotto print dress with matching orange sandals; while the look doesn’t exactly say red carpet, we like the fact that the actress opted for print in an otherwise endless run of block colours on the night.
Jhene Aiko also kept it quirky on the red carpet with a dark orange snakeskin-print gown which she accessorised with a statement necklace and box clutch. In a simple comment from our IG follower @daisymdvb – “classy”.
The Dancing With the Stars judged Julianne Hough also opted for orange with this gown by Zuhair Murad with a beaded neckline and side slit. We also love the gold clutch by Lee Savage and gold sandals by Tamara Mellon.
Actress Olivia Munn was another celebrity who sparkled in a metallic number. Going for gold, Munn also went for a high slit and low plunge flashing a bit of skin. We are not too sure about her belt though.
We do love us a little bit of Zendaya but oh why oh why did her stylist not introduce these gold palazzo pants to a steamer? What could have been an effortlessly chic look turned into a couldn’t-make-an-effort look. Shame!
JLo didn’t score any points with s or with our our followers in this blush Neem Acra dress. In the words of @kingraah “She’s too old for this mess, it’s like she’s over doing it. She should swap dresses with Selena Gomez.” While we do love JLo’s killer body, we feel she should keep showing off her abs to the stage or her super sexy music videos and opt for more age-appropriate and less for the looks reminscent of her Jenny-from-the-block years.
By far the worst look on the red carpet proved to be Bleona Qereti’s fish net look. While the Euros of Hollywood star has the figure to pull it off, her misfortune was wearing this look so soon after Rihanna’s CFDA look by Adam Selman which of course drew comparisons. Our Instagram followers were not impressed either; @chinemechanel simply said, “#RiRiTaughtEm” while @aries_babygirl said, “she tot she culd be an amber rose too..lol” comparing the look to Amber Rose’sby
