The world is taking notice of Nigeria’s film industry, thanks to the success of breakthrough movies such as Half of a Yellow Sun. The stars of the film were out in force at the Lagos premiere, which took place on Saturday April 12 at the Silverbird Galleria, Victoria Island.
In attendance were the film’s stars, including Genevieve Nnaji, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Gloria Young and OC Ukeje, as well as the director Biyi Bandele, executive producer Tunde Folawiyo and bestselling author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, who wrote the book on which the movie is based. She arrived on the red carpet dressed in a stunning floor length red and white gown, with intricate shoulder straps and a slashed skirt that revealed a delicately embroidered underskirt.
Genevieve Nnaji is one of the most glamorous Nollywood stars, and her recent appearances at some of Nigeria’s star studded events have proved that. Following on from the Lagos premiere, where she rocked a mauve spotted pant suit, Genevieve attended Etisalat Nigeria’s private screening of Half of a Yellow Sun where she looked stunning in a grey Escada dress, Christian Louboutin heels and a Chanel lambskin clutch bag.
A few days later she went on to attend the AY Live: Happiness Edition show wearing a Catherine Malandrino print shirt dress, again teaming it up with Louboutin Athena Alta sandals and a Chanel PVC and calfskin bag.
Other stars attending the Nigerian comedian’s annual show were actress Venita ‘Vee Vee’ Akpofure, who wore a shimmering black sequined dress with plunging neckline. Funke Akindele rocked the 1920s flapper look with a short fringed silver mini dress, while the host, Ay himself, looked dapper in a white blazer with sequined collar, white pants, geeky glasses and black shoes.
Other Nollywood stars who are creating a big stir on and off screen are Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde, who has been nominated for ‘Personality of the Year’ in MTV’s Africa Music Awards, which took place in June. Following on from the accolade of being in Time Magazine’s 100 most influential people list, Omotola never fails to light up red carpet events, often sticking with Nigerian designers such as Alter Ego, Iconic Invanity and Ejiro Amos Tafiri.
Beautiful actress Ini Edo looked stunning at the premiere of Knocking on Heaven’s Door in Lagos. Wearing a floor length dramatic black dress, she also showed some skin by choosing a backless design, which prompted a flurry of flash bulbs from the waiting paparazzi.
There were also plenty of opportunities for star spotting as the famous and glamorous turned out for the 2014 Africa Magic Viewer’s Choice Awards in Lagos. Nollywood diva Rita Dominic wowed in a bright red custom made Lanre Da Silva-Ajayi fishtail gown that shimmered with sequins as The Meeting actress sashayed along the red carpet. Monalisa Chinda looked absolutely stunning in a bottle green off the shoulder gown from April by Kunbi, while Mercy Johnson wore a beautiful purple floor length dress with an asymmetric ruffled waist and train.
With so much glamour, it’s always a treat to keep an eye on these red carpet events, to indulge the fashionista in us all.
