Almost a decade after she first covered Paper in August 2007, Rihanna goes punk in a grocery shop for the March cover of the magazine.

For our spring #BreakTheRules cover, the Paper team took inspiration from her budding acting career and chameleon-like powers of transformation to cast her as a high fashion clerk in a bodega of the future.

“We thought it would be interesting to put a superstar like Rih in such an everyday surrounding,” says Shannon Stokes, who styled the shoot alongside Farren Fucci. “And Farren added the ‘future’ angle to give it a twist, so it became a challenge to envision what a girl who worked there might look like,” he added.

Photographed by Sebastian Faena, the Anti singer is seen wearing a range of multicoloured hair and futuristic looks from designers such as Acne Studios, Marc Jacobs, Dior and Proenza Schouler.
