The 2016 edition of the annual Pirelli calendar has been unveiled and it is safe to say it is a long way away from the provocative images of yesteryears. With the world-renowned photographer Annie Leibovitz at the helm, this year’s edition turns the lens of female nudity far more tastefully than its predecessors.
Lensed by Leibovitz in black and white are comedian Amy Schumer, artist Yoko Ono, tennis ace Serena Williams, model Natalia Vodianova and many more. Nudity is kept to a minimum, with only Serena Williams and Amy Schumer are photographed in their underwear, proving women can be celebrated for their achievements and not just for how good they look in their birthday suits.
“It is a departure. I started to think about the roles women play, women who have achieved something. I thought the women should look strong but natural,” said Leibovitz who is one of the few female photographers to work on the calendar in its 51 years.
“Pirelli has always given free rein to the photographer, so it’s really about choice of photographer. I think the company has wanted to shift for a few years and my mandate was that they wanted to see some change,” the photographer added.
Other women to complete line up are musician Patti Smith, author Fran Lebowitz, blogger Tavi Gevinson, philantrophist Agnes Gund and granddaughter Sadie, director Ava DuVernay, Lucas Film co-chair Kathleen Kennedy, artist Shirin Neshat, Dreamworks president Mellody Hobson and actress Yao Chen.by
