On Saturday evening, at an off-calendar show with only a select 100 guests in audience (which included, amongst others, Anna Wintour, Olsen twins, Ciara, Lindsay Lohan, photographer Terry Richardson and designer Alexander Wang) at Lycee Henri IV – a posh secondary school taken over by West’s team for the event, rapper and front row regular Kanye West made his highly anticipated foray into fashion as more than just another A-list spectator.
For a cosy Spring/Summer 2012, Kanye served swags of fur en masse. Leather jackets and skirts with a S&M feel, cut-out bandage dresses, spray on jeans, tiny blazers, fierce statement heels may have been intended to bring an edge to the otherwise laid-back sport-luxe look Kanye’s design team (Kanye confirmed that he had been helped by Kim Jones, the Louis Vuitton menswear designer, by the British designer Louise Goldin, and by Louise Wilson of Central Saint Martins) but offered very little novelty to what we’ve seen on runways across the globe time and time again.
While the collection went down a storm with West’s front-row friends (Carine Roitfeld told him she was placing a personal order while Ciara gushed, “There was a lot of attitude. It was strong, sexy … I loved it. I kept seeing looks that made me think, ‘Oh my God, I want that.'”) the fashion jury, it seems, is still out on the final verdict.
What do you think: Is Kanye the next Victoria Beckham or should he stick with the day job?
