Seeing ‘selfie’ – the smartphone self-portrait – has been declared word of the year for 2013, according to Britain’s Oxford University Press here at FAB HQ we had to celebrate the humble selfie.
Imagine – away from professional cameras, styling or make up, selfie is the self-creation of just about anyone with access to a smart phone – no styling, no flattering light, no professional make up necessary, selfie has evened out the playing field.
With ever rising popularity in direct relation to the increasing use of social networking websites like Instagram and Twitter to become mainstream shorthand for any self-taken photograph, if Oxford Dictionary’s seal of approval is anything to go by, selfie is here to stay.
First used in 2002 accoring to Judy Pearsall, the editorial director for Oxford dictionaries, ‘selfie’ has now spun its own spinoffs in the shape of ‘helfie’ for a picture taken of someone’s own hair, ‘belfie’ for taking a picture of your own backside and drelfie’ for a self portrait while in a drunken state.
Without further ado, in celebration of the selfie, we bring you some unforgettable selfies of African celebrities.
In Car Selfie
Perhaps the most common selfie of all, this in-car selfie shows the person clearly posing inside a car, often en route meetings, events, dinner. Occasionally one is stuck in traffic and the frustration can show on facial expressions.
Rita Dominic and Lami Phillips could be crowned the queens of in-car selfies.
On-board Selfie
A progresive form of in-car selfie which sees the poser upgrade from the roads over to the skies, oft sported by gigging artists.
Synchornised Selfie aka Selfie +
Speaks for itself – synchronised selfie involves a group of mates posing for the shot taken by one on the edge of the group hug – often captured as a high angle so as include all involved in the group hug. This is a favourite of group outing and partners (see exes Ice Prince and Yvonne Nelson here).
Close up Selfie
This one is the realm of super fit and super sexy so unless you are as pretty as one of these ladies, best avoided and left for superstars.
Double/Triple/Quadruple Selfie
This one falls into the ‘so good I had frame it a few times and post up as a collage’ category.
Silly Selfie
Sometimes also presented as a multiple selfie (see above) and involving synchronised selfie, this one involves silly face; anything from duck face to tongue out works. Please note: there is absolutely nothing silly about Toolz O in this picture, but the angle itself qualifies it as a silly selfie.
Mirror Selfie
One where access to a smart phone a a full length mirror could lead to very artistic and/or tantalising shots. Often posted from bathrooms.
‘Check Me Out’ Selfie
Ranging from six-pack selfie to belfie, this selfie is taken and posted solely with the aim of making your sex want to be you and the opposite sex want to do you.
Felfie
Feet + selfie.
