Nobody can escape stress in day-to-day activities from work, family, relationships and more. But the ways in which each individual handles a stressful situation is different and now a new study shows that women tend to handle stressful situations better – another reason why women should get more credit!
A University of Vienna neuroscience lab found that stressed-out men, in an effort to conserve resources, become more self-centered, more egocentric and less empathetic. The women, however, react in a completely opposite way, becoming “prosocial” and better able to distinguish their own emotions and intentions from those of other people.
How did they do this? Giorgia Silani from the International School for Advanced Studies (SISSA) of Trieste said The researchers stress-tested an even amount of male and female subjects in conditions of moderate stress, like public speaking or doing mental math tasks. The participants then had to imitate certain movements, recognize their own or other people’s emotions, or make a judgement taking on another person’s perspective. The results were that stress worsens performance in men in all three types of tasks, where the opposite was true for women.
In a bid to help men handle stress better, GQ Magazine has suggested 4 tips
1. Hug it out. Docs say oxytocin levels are pumped up by sharing a bro-hug or high-five or other friendly physical contact.
2. Rub it out. Which leads to another type of friendly physical contact (the kind between consenting adults, or one adult with a laptop) that aids the release of the so-called “love” hormone. Massage, the kind on your back, shoulders, and neck can work, too
3. Work it out. Exercise helps stimulate oxy production and has even been researched as a way to explain/promote positive interactions between athletes and team building.
4. Chill it out. Even if you’re not pumping she-levels of oxy, it’s worth remembering she is, and if she can keep cool, so can you. Take a walk, or, you know, do any of the above. No need to be a dick, just cause you have one.
So next time you are in a stressful situation with a man and he is about to lose it, you know what to do.
