November has finally arrived and with it arrives the male event of Movember - the Season of the Moustache! For those of you who are not familiar with the wacky custom, Movember is responsible for the sudden growth of moustaches appearing on the faces of thousands of men (including my other half this year – see him here!) around the world – all in aid of raising awareness and vital funds for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer and other cancers which affect men.
On the 1st November, all men register with Movember.com with a clean-shaven face, then for the rest of the month these ‘selfless men, known as Mo Bros’, groom, trim and wax their way into realms of tash perfection. Supported by the women in their lives (Mo Sistas), the Bros raise funds by seeking out sponsorship and begging donations. The Bros receive their own profile online to keep track of their progress and gain sponsors – they even get a styling guide for their gallant mo! Then, at the end of the month, the Bros and Sistas celebrate their moustache by either throwing their own party or joining one of the infamous Gala Partés held around the world by Movember for Movember.
Since starting in Melbourne, Australia, the Movember movement has grown to become a global affair inspiring more than 1.1 million men and women to participate with formal campaigns in Australia, New Zealand, the US, Canada, the UK, Finland, the Netherlands, Spain, South Africa and Ireland – even reaching as far as Russia, Dubai, Hong Kong, Antarctica, Rio de Janeiro and Mumbai…phew!
In 2010, over 112,000 UK Mo Bros and Mo Sistas got on board, raising a hair raising £11.7 million for men’s health.
“Big steps have been taken towards changing attitudes and habits relating to men’s health around the world but there is still much to be done to catch up with the women’s health movement” the website states, “via the moustache, Movember aims to fulfill its vision of having an everlasting impact on the face of men’s health, by continuing to spark conversation and spread awareness of men’s health each year. ”
So, what are you all waiting for Bros? Get registering and get the Sistas on board to support your gallant Movember journey. happy Movember!
