Lira feels that her, as well as fellow African artists, have a responsibility to represent Africa globally. In her words, “We’re proud of being African, but there’s also a desire to be a part of the world. Part of the way we can raise the consciousness back home is when people see us rise on the world stage. We don’t do it for the individual, we do it for the entire group.”

In 2003 the title track to Lira’s debut album, All My Love bumped American singer, Beyonce’s “Dangerously in Love” from the #1 position on South African charts.  Also, the video became the first music video from a South African artist to be featured on VH-1. In 2010, Lira was among the artists who performed at the FIFA World Cup Kick-Off Concert. She performed a rendition of late Miriam Makeba’s “Pata Pata”.

Also in 2010, Lira was chosen to perform at the 92 nd birthday celebration of former South African president Nelson Mandela, where she gave what has been called one of her best live performances.

And now, after almost a decade of a successful career in her hometown and in Africa, Lira is prepared to take America by storm!
