With so much controversy and backlash surrounding the role of Zendaya Coleman as Aaliyah in a long overdue biopic, the Disney Channel teen star has dropped out of the movie production and production company, Lifetime has announced that the movie will be on hold for now.
Lifetime tweeted on Sunday: “We are sad Zendaya will no longer portray Aaliyah. Production is currently on hold.”
The decision to remove Zendaya Coleman as the lead role in the movie comes as no surprise as a lot of controversy, even from Aaliyah’s family, has been raised since the announcement that Zendaya was to take on the role of Aaliyah. A lot of people commented on her age, colour, acting experience and more as reasons for Zendaya not to play the role of the late RnB princess.
This is a major setback for the movie and we can only speculate who will be chosen to play Aaliyah when production starts up again.
Rihanna was rumoured to want the role of Aaliyah as well as Teyana Taylor – do you think they can portray Aaliyah perfectly or should Lifetime have stuck with Zendaya Coleman?
