With American actress of Kenyan descent Lupita Nyong’o signed for Miu Miu, Kenyan model Malaika Firth fronting the Valentino Spring/Summer 2014 campaign as well as being picked as one of the faces for Burberry’s new season campaing, and Cindy Bruna filling her shoes for Prada, we couldn’t help but notice the increasing diversity of black women in high fashion and discussed this a few weeks back right here on FAB. As if on cue, another high fashion brand Givenchy has unveiled their new Spring/Summer 2014 campaing images. And what do you know – all of the campaigns female models are women of color, namely Maria Borges, Ebony Riley, and Asia Chow.
Queen of Neo-Soul, the gorgoues Erykah Badu fronts the campaign photographed by the famed fashion photography duo Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott.
Titled ‘Cultural Crash’, the collection draws from a variety of cultures, embarking on a journey from Japan to Africa to America. Riccardo Tisci selected Badu to front the campaign, feeling she would be the perfect epitome for the African/Japanese blend.
Let’s just hope Givenchy’s choice of featuring women of culture is not just for a season.
