Pharell is making the rest of us look bad. The American hip-hop singer has had so many achievements in 2014 already, and we are barely four months in – from a fragrance with Commes Des Garcon, a smash hit single “Happy”, being on the cover of GQ Style Bible and more.
This is the first time Adidas has partnered with a designer who owns their own textile company (you didn’t know that about Pharell?)– Williams‘ Bionic Yarn coming from The Vortex Project; an initiative with Parley for the Oceans to turn plastic debris from the oceans into yarn and fabric.
According to Pharell Williams, “Working with an iconic brand like Adidas is such an incredible opportunity. From the classic track suit, to growing up in Virginia wearing Stan Smiths, Adidas has been a staple in my life. Their pieces are timeless. This is an exciting partnership for both me and for Bionic Yarn.”
Talking about the collaboration, the Grammy winner had this to say:
How did the collaboration come about?
This has been a long time coming. I have talked to the Adidas folks for years and the worlds just started colliding more and more with their relationship with NIGO. Then, I met them at a trade show where we were showcasing BBC and presenting Bionic Yarn.
How do you plan to integrate materials from Bionic Yarn into the collection?
Bionic Yarn can be anything – cotton, polyester. It will be my designs and just applying the technology to the product.
What opportunities do you have, with respect to design, with Adidas that you didn’t have in other clothing projects like BBC and ICECREAM?
I wouldn’t say I didn’t have these opportunities with BBC and ICECREAM, it’s just a different concept; you can’t compare one to the other.
What can we expect from the collaborative collection?
You will have to wait and see.
Have any iconic Adidas pieces, like the Stan Smith or the track suit, been given the Pharrell touch?
I think you will see a lot of classic pieces with a twist.by
