An African-American doctor has pleaded with women to stop sacrificing exercise because they don’t want to mess up their hair.

A study in the US state of North Carolina showed that about a third of the 103 respondents, admitted that they exercised less for fear of ruining their hair.

Dr Regina M. Benjamin said, “Often times you get women saying, “I can’t exercise today because I don’t want to sweat my hair back or get my hair wet.”  She explained that women, in particular black women, spend tons of money to make their naturally curly tresses straight and any moisture or motion can destroy their efforts so they just avoid exercise altogether.

I personally think that this is a bit of an exaggeration, I personally have never heard hair used as an excuse to not exercise (at least not here in England anyway). I just wonder how much truth is in this especially since this is based on such a small study. So I’m asking you, what do you think? Has a pricey hairdo ever stopped you exercising or is this study complete nonsense?

I got quite upset a few weeks ago when I thought my hair “frizzed out” after I did some exercise, turns out it was just wet, lol. I would never use it as an excuse & you say you’ve never heard of it here but I’ve always heard women say they can’t go swimming coz it will mess with their hair so I do think there is some truth to this.
