Kcee hit the airwaves with his infectious club banger, ‘Limpopo’ off the Take Over album in 2013 and the sky has been a stone throw for the former KC Presh musician.
Kelechi Chinweike Okonkw0 is one of the top 10 recognized acts in the music industry now who has earned a lot of local and international acclaim from fans of his music. The highlife maestro has not relented in releasing ‘sweet music’ as he called it since the Kc Presh group split in 2011. Certainly, he was the hidden back bone of the former ‘Star Quest’ group. ‘Take Over’ album consists of 19 tracks in total boasting of 6 smashing hit tracks.
Hustle Your Way– I believe the first track of an album has to start strong to kick off a strong first impression of the track and Hustle your way was in tune with the ‘Take Over’ mode. The inspirational track does the justice of lifting the spirit of every gloomy listener. ”Life is beautiful…yes man gat to work…hustle your way” fused with the high pitched instrumentals to suit the danceable tune of the gospel tune.
Hakuna Matata– The everyday fast tempo music came to mind while listening to song. It is just a cliche of what we listen to on the radio everyday, as he constantly chanted ‘Hakuna Matata’ countless times I was waiting for the part the beat and the vocals would finally coordinate. On the whole, too much emphasis was placed on his pick up phrases “Sisi mia bum bum, Okpekete follow me go,” crowning it a poor delivery.
Pull Over– Undeniably talent was expected in this powerful collaboration with Wizkid. Kcee won the hearts of many in this infectious afro-pop blend which leaves you chorusing ‘Pull Over’. Wizkid’s role addded a special oomph that will not be forgotten in a hurry.
Limpopo– Just because its Kcee, this song worked well for him. No other artist would have been able to put together an anthem of the year such as this powerful . With Del B on the beats we expect nothing less from the ‘Limpopo’ team. Limpopo commanded an insane popularity for the multi talented artist.
Emmah– Amongst all other appearances besides Wizkid in the album such as Timaya, Davido and Phyno, ‘Tongolo’ crooner Dbanj raised the versatility bar. Blending the tecno tune with the pulsating heavy drum beats is an outstanding attempt.
Had It Been I know– Slowing the pace on this one, it sounds like a Harrysong work in progress as a result of the sound production of the melodious vocals. Kcee is known for his trado highlife medleys and ‘Had It Been I know’ is a step from the norm.
‘Totori’, ‘Ogadinma‘, ‘Ifeneme’ are the predictable repetitions initiated in the Nigerian music of today which seems to be full of killer beats and less content. No doubt Kcee’s music skill is a gold mine amidst the array of Nigerian musicians. and ‘Take Over’ was a fascinating debut album.
