If you are reading this then you woke up his morning so before you go on say a quick prayer to God or whatever deity you serve.

That done?

Have you had a cup of coffee today?

Well if you haven’t then you should. This might surprises you seeing as it is generally said that coffee is very bad for you but the truth is coffee can actually be beneficial to your health.

Here’s how…

Studies suggest that drinking between 1 -5 cups of coffee a day can help reduce the risk of Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. Admittedly 1 – 5 cups a day is a bit much but the benefits are high, coffee contains antioxidants, which can ward off brain damage and help the neurotransmitters involved in cognitive thinking function better.

Studies show that 200 milligrams of caffeine, which is about the same amount in 16-ounces of brewed coffee provides relief from headaches including migraines. How coffee manages to do this isn’t entirely clear but scientists have claimed that coffee boosts the activity of brain cells causing surrounding blood vessels to constrict.

Although research in this aspect is limited, the little that is known is that the more you drink coffee, the lower any incident of cirrhosis or any other liver diseases. Some studies have shown that every 2-cup increase in your daily coffee intake reduces the risk of liver cancer by 43%!

Moderate coffee drinkers are less prone to stroke than non-coffee drinkers; this they say is linked to anti-oxidants. Coffee has more anti-oxidants per serving than blueberries making it the highest source of anti-oxidants in most diets. Coffee raises your blood pressure and heart rate immediately after drinking it but in the long run it may actually lower your blood pressure; this is because the anti-oxidants contained in coffee activates nitric oxide thus widening the blood vessels.

Now that those saying coffee is extremely dangerous for you are changing their tune, that doesn’t mean you should go on a coffee binge; coffee does have its pitfalls. Some people are very sensitive to coffee and they get extremely jittery or anxious after drinking it. Also habitual coffee drinkers get withdrawal headaches when they go off the drink. Coffee can also make it harder for you to get your much-needed sleep and this gets worse with age. Do not let this dissuade you from enjoying a steamy brew, remember that everything in life has its advantages and disadvantages, what’s important is if it does more good than harm. So go ahead, have a cup of coffee today!
