With the fourth season of The Voice Turkey (O Ses Türkiye) now full steam ahead, I have taken to binge watching Sunday and Monday’s shows – 2-hour long each so it was no surprise that I had to sit down for a 4-hour The Voice Turkey marathon on Tuesday evening. The surprise, however, came in the shape of Justina Adu, a young Nigerian girl who decided to compete on the show. Born in Nigeria, raised in Germany, schooled in the UK, Justina explained that it was her Erasmus exchange programme that brought her to Istanbul and since then she has fallen in love with the country and hopes to continue living in Turkey.
23-year-old Justina sang “Don’t Wake Me Up” and got three judges –Ebru Gündeş,Gökhan Özoğuz and Hadise vying to get her on their team. She endeared herself to the judges with her love of Turkish culture and her diverse background but in the end went with ska band Athena’s lead singer Gökhan she revealed she had been a fan of since her time in Germany where she first heard his music. Gökhan in turn praised Justina’s voice and said she had “soul”.
Do have a listen and be the judge. Would you have turned around for Justina?
